Spices provide comfort and healing

spices and herbs

Maybe it’s because I grew up in Oklahoma that I had a fascination with herbs, spices and everything healing since I was a child. Living on a farm twenty miles from the county seat of Enid my sisters and I explored every leaf, rock, feather and animal that inhabited and surrounded our home. We grew up knowing that Indians, midwives and certain women used herbs in their healing rituals.

When I read Dr. Steven Joyal’s article from VitalJuice.com that describes certain herbs used to promote healing, I wanted to make certain Nature’s restoring properties are in your cabinet.

Here’s what Dr. Joyal had to say:  humble herbs and spices have the power to fight disease, soothe pain and more. Feel better fast with his spice solutions:

Upset stomach: From seasickness to morning sickness, you can get rid of nausea naturally by chewing on 3 or 4 pieces of candied ginger.

Headache: A teaspoon of turmeric might ease pain without pills. (Look for tumeric’s active ingredient, curcumin, in supplement form.) Other research suggests that butterbur extract can help with migraines.

Colds: Add rosemary or oregano to your chicken soup–the herbs have antiviral and antimicrobial properties to help fight infections. Sip some ginger tea for dessert to reduce mucus production.

Bloating: Try dandelion extract. This natural diuretic might help you get your flat belly back.

Joint pain: Again, reach for curcumin and ginger. Both have potent anti-inflammatory effects to help soothe aches and get you back into the swing of things.
