As the saying goes, “Beauty comes from within,” and oh, how true it rings! That said, it also doesn’t preclude you from wanting and trying to look your best on the outside.
The reality is that sometimes our busy lives show up on our faces as tiredness, but there is a proven way to look more awake and rejuvenated that is all natural—facial exercises. In fact, a new study published this month in the journal JAMA Dermatology suggests that facial exercise, sometimes called “facial yoga,” can make faces look up to three years younger.
“Now there is some evidence that facial exercises may improve facial appearance and reduce some visible signs of aging,” says lead author of the study, Dr. Murad Alam, vice chair and professor of dermatologyat Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and a Northwestern Medicine dermatologist.
There’s absolutely nothing wrong with wanting to look the best we can, and if there’s an easy, effective, totally natural way to do it, why not?
That’s where the Facial Magic system comes in. Just as people commit to daily movement, it makes sense that they exercise the face and neck. Facial Magic is based on a 100-year-old proven French method that transforms faces and necks in as little as nine weeks with no equipment but cotton gloves and your own two hands. The cotton gloves are used to anchor the muscle and create resistance. Unlike other programs, there are no contortions, puckers, twists, or funny faces—just proven resistance exercises that really work.
Here are three exercises from the method to help you begin your transformation:
1. Eyebrow lifting.
Grab your mirror, hold it at eye level and look at the distance between your eyebrows and your eyelashes. Place the three middle fingers of each hand underneath your eyebrows. Drop the palms of your hands to your face. Push your eyebrows up and “anchor” the area by pushing into the forehead. Using your forehead muscle, push down into your fingertips.
Keep your eyes open, look straight ahead and count to five. Repeat the movement three times for a count of 10 and close your eyes at the 7th second to force oxygenated blood to flood into the upper eye tissue. Always take a cleansing breath after each movement. Hold your mirror at eye level…do you see the change? Lasting changes come with consistency.
2. Stretch your jaw.
Sit with your shoulders erect. Lift your chin and look at the ceiling. Slowly turn your face to the right, look over your shoulder at the ceiling. Slide your bottom jaw forward to jut out your jaw. Hold that contraction for five seconds. Slowly release your jaw and gently bring your head back to the starting position. Take a cleansing breath. Repeat the movement, looking over your right should three times for a count of 10. When you’ve completed this, hold your mirror at eye level and assess what you see. Then switch sides—lift your chin, look at the ceiling, and turn your face to the left. Hold the contractions for five, 10, 10, and 10 seconds.
3. Undo unnecessary worries.
Here’s our Facial Magic exercise for vertical forehead lines. Place the three middle fingers of each hand vertically between your eyebrows. Your fingertips will be next to your eyebrows. Anchor this area by pressing into your forehead. Hold these muscles that surround the eyebrows as you try to bring your fingertips together. Hold for five seconds. Release, remove your hands, take a cleansing breath and repeat three times for 10 seconds each.
