6 Tips for a Beautiful Smile

Beautiful Smile, Luscious Lips, Lip Plump

Picture a lineup of your favorite movie stars or celebs. Chances are they all have beautiful smiles full of straight, white teeth. A healthy smile is not only part of our ideal standard of beauty, but it's also an important part of our overall health.  Here are 6 Tips for a Beautiful Smile.

First things first, you have to take care of your teeth if you expect them to be healthy and look gorgeous. As you know, this means brushing your teeth at least twice a day and flossing on a daily basis. It also means changing your toothbrush every three months, or when you notice that the bristles look overused. Finally, you must also visit a quality dentist, like for a check-up at least twice a year.

Beautiful Smile # 1 is about healthy teeth care, just like your mother always preached.

A. Brush and Floss Everyday: There’s a reason you were always urged to brush your teeth. When you brush and floss you remove bacteria and food particles from the teeth. Doing so reduces the severity of plaque buildup, reducing the chances of developing tooth decay and gum disease.

B. Have your Teeth Professionally Cleaned: Brushing and flossing can’t actually remove plaque from your teeth. However, a professional cleaning can. Removing plaque greatly decreases the chances of developing gum disease. In addition, a routine cleaning can freshen your breath and brighten your teeth. The American Dental Association suggests having a cleaning once every six months.

C. Cut Back on Sugar: Bacteria break down sugar, leading to plaque buildup and an increase in oral acidity. By reducing your consumption of sugary snacks and drinks you can promote better oral health.

D. If you have stained teeth, gap in your smile, or damaged/misshapen teeth then you may benefit from cosmetic dentistry, perhaps porcelain veneers and teeth whitening, to improve the appearance of your smile.

E. Certain foods are harmful for our teeth, as well as our whole body. These foods include sugary drinks and candies. Try to keep your intake of these to a minimum. There are also ingredients that stain your teeth, including coffee, tea, red wine, blueberries, beets. Generally anything that is dark in color. When you consume such items, try your best to remember to brush afterward. Or follow up with a natural teeth-cleaning food like an apple, celery or raw carrot.

Beautiful Smile #2 -- Invisalign

Sure, there are other options out there for straightening your teeth, but none offers the level of comfort, convenience and confidence that you'll find with Invisalign. And no matter what stage you're in in life, you'll appreciate how their approach to treatment has minimal interference in how you live, but has a significant positive impact on how you look and feel about yourself.

Invisaligns are virtually invisible; are smooth comfortable; are removable for easy cleaning; and you can eat whatever you want.

The typical price of Invisalign braces is usually a bit higher than regular braces. The average cost, according to the manufacturer, is between $3,500 and $8,000. Your dentist or orthodontist can give you a better estimate.

Beautiful Smile #3 -- You’ve got to whiten those teeth

Maybe you've always wanted a beautiful white smile. Or your teeth have yellowed over time. Or you're not happy with the staining that results from drinking coffee, tea or cola. Also, just like we all have different hair and skin color, people also have different tooth color. Some teeth are more yellow than others, while others yellow with aging.

Surface stains and internal discoloration can be caused by many things such as aging, tobacco, coffee, tea, too much fluoride and antibiotics.  Here are a few ways to whiten your teeth:

A. brush, floss, and use mouthwash daily

B. Baking Soda: Mix half a teaspoon of baking soda with a little water to create a pasta like consistency. Baking soda can be extremely gritty so make sure to add enough water. The baking soda will help brighten your smile. However, only do this about once a week since it can be a bit harsh on your teeth if you do it daily! Also, don’t forget to brush the back of your teeth!

C. Lemon Peels: Lemons are known to be a natural brighter. However, be sure to only use the peel, and rinse your mouth afterwards. The acid from the lemon can be harmful to the enamel on your teeth, and remember once your enamel is gone-it’s gone forever.

D. Smash about 5 strawberries together in a bowl and rub the mixture on your teeth. Once you have left them on your teeth for about a minute, then go ahead and rinse your mouth. Before beginning any whitening procedure, be sure to consult with your dentist. Only he or she can evaluate whether you're a suitable candidate for a particular treatment. Or you can try it yourself and purchase one of many whiteners at your local pharmacy.

Once you’ve completed a whitening treatment, there are a few steps you can take to maintain your whiter smile.

A. Avoid stain-causing foods and beverages – coffee, tea, wine, sports drinks, hard candy, berries and tomato sauce are all foods that can cause tooth discoloration.

B. Use a straw – when drinking beverages, use a straw to keep stain causing dyes away from your teeth.

C. Quit smoking – smoking tobacco can cause teeth to become discolored. Eliminating tobacco can help keep your teeth bright.

A. Use a lip balm and simple Vaseline and exfoliation, i.e., simple sugar mixed with Vaseline, for a smooth supple lip.

B. Or a more luscious solution: The Luscious Lips pump. The Luscious Lips device creates a vacuum that gently draws fluid into the lips. In the beginning, your lips are not accustomed to holding the additional fluid, so it is necessary to gradually build up the tissue by using the device gently and sparingly, especially in the critical first few days. More on this one later.

Beautiful Lips #6 – Lipstick

Getting a consistently bright, A-list-worthy smile can be a difficult -- not to mention expensive -- task. However, there are certain tricks of the trade to amp up that toothy smile, that are, believe it or not, wallet-friendly. Let’s look at different colors and what they do for that award-winning smile.

A. RED LIPS

Pick blue-based formulas over orange-y reds.

There's a reason why MAC's Ruby Woo has remained a cult favorite for makeup fiends, industry insiders, and celebrities alike: The scarlet hue is already flattering for most skin tones, but with its perfectly proportioned blue base, it's also like a whitening treatment in a tube. Why? It's a matter of color wheel logic: Blue and orange/yellow sit across from each other on the color wheel, so blue tones tend to cancel out orange or yellow tones when juxtaposed together, and vice versa. Therefore, lipsticks formulated with a blue base will help cancel out any orange or yellow tones on your teeth.

B. BERRY LIPS

When in doubt, go with a berry hue.

There’s a lot to choose from. Because berries are generally a riff on pink or purple-y reds, the blue tones are fairly strong -- which, again, does wonders for a bright smile, whether you choose a light raspberry or a deep plum. Another thing to keep in mind: Slightly sheer, glossy formulas also amp up the wattage of your grin, as opposed to a lip that's more matte. Pick dark berries and purples over browns.

C. PINK LIPS

Pink lips are staples, particularly during the summer months, but finding the right pink to keep in your makeup kit means to steer clear to something that has an orange base as it’ll emphasize the yellow in the teeth. Keeping in mind true pinks instead of anything too bright is your best bet, which is what you’ll get in Dior's Dior Addict Fluid Stick in Tropiques.

And, just so you can have a bit of peace of mind, anything goes with lip texture -- gloss, matte, shimmery or just creamy, just the color affects your smile wattage.

D. NUDE LIPS
You want to look at nude and neutral lip shades that are more on the pink side than the brown side. Tarte Amazonian Lip Butter in Park Ave Princess errs on the side of caution with a pink-based nude, and offers ample hydration and coverage for those days when bold just won’t do.

E. Sheer LIP formulas with a hint of gloss.

Beautiful Smile, Lips Enhanced, Lipstick Queen's Butterfly Ball

It might seem counterintuitive to go so au naturel, but sometimes it just takes a little gloss to make those teeth shine. These days, I’m obsessed with Lipstick Queen's Butterfly Ball colors, a range specifically designed to brighten teeth. They're formulated like lipsticks, and look ugly in the tube, they have a blue shimmer. But it turns out that's the very genius of it, it somehow goes on sheer with just a hint of iridescence, and the blue is undetectable to the eye. Your teeth, however, are suddenly radiant.
But when it comes to faking a megawatt smile, these are your enemies:

Frosty shimmer
